5 days/6 nights for £900 + VAT
We run a limited number of week-long residential courses, close to Rock and Polzeath in North Cornwall. They offer one-to-one tuition in key filmmaking skills with only a few places on each course. They are aimed at three levels of students:
13-16 year old students with a keen interest in films and how they are made.
16-18 year old A-level Art and Media Study students studying photography and considering filmmaking in further education.
19-24 year old undergraduates on a filmmaking course.
Above and Right: Production and final edit of students’ multi-camera Outside Broadcast
“Rachel learned so much…she hasn't stopped talking about the whole experience since she has been home:-)” Email from Mother, Louise B-D, Aug 2016
“What can I say, Peter has had such an amazing week and will definitely be back next year. He is really inspired, thank you so much. Email from Mother, Jackie T, Aug 2016.
“You guys made me feel very at home. It was an awesome experience, I learnt a lot. You are amazing at teaching and should do a lot more of it.” Email from film student, Stephanie, Aug 2016
“I would love to stay in contact with you all and potentially come back when I have the chance. Thanks for a really great week.” Email from film student, Peter, Aug 2016.
The courses are designed to give a solid grounding in key filmmaking skills that will underpin any successful career in commercial filmmaking. Over the week, 20 hours of workshops will cover camera-craft, lighting, editing, sound, multi-camera shoots and will culminate in organising and controlling a live outside broadcast. Most important are the principals of commercial filmmaking which are often given minimal emphasis in film school and at art colleges. Students are embedded in our fully-functional film production company and will be taught filmmaking from a perspective that ultimately will earn them a living. The week’s experience will be a positive addition to every student’s CV.
Chris Mugford will lead the workshops. He has a multi-award winning career in London ad agencies and as a commercials director. Dr Rosalind Poppleton, PhD is an experienced tutor of all ages of student and works alongside Chris as a producer. Joe Driver worked for many years at the BBC on classic dramas, sitcoms and OBs from Dr.Who to Wimbledon. Students will use the most up-to-date equipment from broadcast level HD cameras and microphones, digital mixers and edit suites. However, we encourage students to bring their own DSLR or other cameras with which they are already familiar.
In addition to the workshops, every night students will be encouraged to watch and crit a feature film in our mini-cinema, for discussion at the start of the next day. There will also be an opportunity each day to take part in further activities. Either students can use this time to shoot and edit planned scripts of their own, or we can organise surfing, sailing, water skiing, coasteering, climbing, riding, and other trips, and a visit to the nearby Eden Project. Transport to and from these activities is free but the activities themselves are charged on at cost and we will organise bookings in advance.
All meals (including beach BBQs) and accommodation are provided, as well as transport to and from train stations or Newquay Airport. Chris and Rosalind are fully DBS-checked and work regularly with, and are trusted by the UK’s top independent schools.
Cornwall is a filmmakers mecca with a long history of major feature films and TV dramas shot on location. From Bond to World War Z, from Poldark to Doc Martin. There is no better place to develop film skills.
